About

So 2 years after I graduated I decided I was up for a new adventure...So here I am in Israel teaching English and getting my masters! Look for my picture and stories here...I will try not to bore you all too much....but I am sure it won't be long until I run into a wall or hit someone with falafel by accident, so no worries!

Looking for something specific?

High Schools: The New JDate

On Thursdays I pull students from a class entirely comprised of boys. This normally would not bother me if I did not have to spend the first 5-10 minutes of every lesson trying to get them to stop hitting on me. Today one boy walked into the room and said “Rachel, I get my driver license yesterday! I take you out now, yes?” Umm not quite. The other intern was being oh so helpful when he said “Ok I will only take 4 of you so that the rest of you have the chance to look at something beautiful”. Seriously dude? Way to allow them to focus on my teaching abilities.

Inappropriate student comments aside I also have teachers trying to set me up left and right. Do I have “desperate” written on my forehead? Or perhaps “American Jew with large chest” is more accurate. I have one science teacher who told me a friend’s son is coming in December and he wants a “cute, single, young girl” to show him around and get to know him better. Then one of my fellow English teachers jumped on the bandwagon and told me about her 26 year old son. She got my phone number days earlier because she wanted to invite me to dinner with her whole family, then comes up to me today and tells me she gave her son my number and he will be calling me up to take me out soon. Whoopee.

Shockingly enough, I did actually get some work accomplished today. The little horndogs make pretty decent students. The session went so well they wanted to stay and work on their speaking skills for an extra hour. So they did. We managed to decrease the amount of pickup lines and increase English speaking ability. I would consider that a successful class.

After school I had my first tutoring session. A girl from my program set it up for me and I was really excited, but also apprehensive because I do not have a lot of experience working with younger students and this girl is 8 years old. After arriving at their house (which means yes I took the correct buses in the correct direction) and marveling at its enormity, I met Mika, the world’s 4th cutest child (following my niece nephew and little baby cousin of course). This girl is cute, sweet, funny and really flippin smart. Unbelievable. She was born in the states and went to first and second grade there and now her parents just want to make sure she does not lose her English. I spent an hour getting to know her and evaluating her ability level and now I can’t wait to see her again next week! Now if only I could forget the fact that her name keeps reminding me of Eurotrip…
